Il 24 agosto nella splendida cornice di Parco Raggio di Pontenure si potrà assistere alla première italiana del film All These Creatures, Palma d’Oro a Cannes per il miglior corto, diretto da Charles Williams, un evento importante che sottolinea, se ce ne fosse bisogno, la vocazione internazionale di Concorto. Abbiamo voluto sentire direttamente Williams per parlare di Cannes, del corto e del suo modo di concepire la narrazione. 1.First of all, congratulations for your first prize at Cannes Festival. Did you expect to be the winner?
Hi Emanuele, thanks for the congratulations. No winning is not something I expected. I think it’s best to try not to anticipate these things.. if that’s possible.
[ITA] Ciao Emanuele, grazie per i complimenti. No, non mi aspettavo di vincere. Penso che sia meglio provare a non anticipare questo tipo di cose, se possibile.
2.Can you tell me something about your beginnings? How did you start your career?
I was just film obsessed since childhood, and started making my own short films on VHS when I was about 13. I always wanted to go to film school but couldn’t really afford it and was also just desperate to start making my own films. So, I used the money I had saved up to make a more professional short film when I was 19. This won some awards and gave me enough attention to move forward with other film, albeit slowly.
[ITA] Sono ossessionato dai film sin dall’infanzia, e ho iniziato a creare i miei cortometraggi sulle VHS quando avevo circa 13 anni. Ho sempre avuto il desiderio di studiare cinema, ma non me lo potevo permettere ed ero anche impaziente di iniziare a fare film. Cosi, a 19 anni, ho usato i miei risparmi per fare un corto più professionale. Questo film ha vinto dei premi e mi ha dato abbastanza attenzione da poter continuare a farne altri, anche se lentamente.
3.What is the plot of this short film? Is there anything autobiographical?
The film is about someone trying to untangle their memories of their father, who was someone volatile and hard to understand. He’s trying to see if this father was a bad person or maybe an mentally ill person and also find what kind of person he was going to turn into and how much control any of us have over that.
[ITA] Il film parla di una persona che prova a risolvere i ricordi del padre, che era instabile e difficile da capire. Prova a capire se il padre era una persona cattiva o se forse una persona mentalmente instabile. Prova anche a capire che tipo di persona sarebbe diventato e quanto controllo abbiamo su ciò.
There is a lot of autobiographical elements to this for me. These are thoughts and feelings I was consumed by when I was younger, and still am, though now from a different perspective. How much blame to we give someone for their actions? Can we have compassion for them, even if not forgiveness? And can we have compassion for ourselves?
[ITA] Ci sono molti elementi autobiografici a riguardo. Sono pensieri e sensazioni che mi hanno consumato quando ero piccolo, e ancora oggi, anche se ora da un’altra prospettiva. Quanta colpa diamo a una persona per le loro azioni? Possiamo compatirla, se non riusciamo a perdonarla? E possiamo compatirci noi stessi?
4.In these last few years you have focused in short narration. Why? Are you interested in the future or thinking about making a long storytelling production?
I think short films can be a great medium to prepare a filmmaker for features, and help you test ideas and ways of working that you can use on bigger films. I am very interested in feature films and have two in development that I’m focusing on at the moment.
[ITA] Penso che i cortometraggi siano un mezzo fantastico per preparare un regista a fare un film, e per aiutarlo a provare le sue idee e modi di lavorare che può usare su film più importanti. Sono molto interessato ai film, infatti al momento ne sto sviluppando due.
5. What are the differences between long and short narration?
Short films are an incredibly difficult thing to get right, for a lot of reasons. Perhaps the main one is that everyone is working together for such a short amount of time, that by the time you are all on the same page, it’s over. With a feature there is more time for everyone to gel and find a way of working together, but there are obviously much larger challenges with that as well. Both can be financially fraught.
[ITA] È incredibilmente difficile far bene un cortometraggio, per molte ragioni. Forse il motivo principale è che tutti lavorano insieme per un brevissimo periodo di tempo, e quando tutti sono sulla stessa lunghezza d’onda, il lavoro è finito. Quando si fa un film, c’é più tempo per unirsi e per trovare modi di lavorare insieme, ma ovviamente ci sono anche delle sfide più grandi. Tutti e due possono essere finanziariamente difficili.
6.What are generally your inspirations?
I’m not really sure, mostly film, certainly some music and writing. More often things from my life have become a source of inspiration – my own feelings and thoughts and experiences. It can really be anything that gives you inspiration, but why it does.. no one knows.
[ITA] A dire il vero non sono sicuro, ma per la maggior parte i film, e sicuramente anche la musica e la scrivere. Molto spesso ci sono cose che accadono nella mia vita che diventano fonte di inspirazione – i miei sentimenti, pensieri e la mia esperienza. Può essere qualsiasi cosa che porta inspirazione, ma perché succede… nessuno lo sa.
7.Have you got ideas for your next work?
Yes I am working on it now. It is set in Australia and based largely in a prison, though the themes and tone and very similar to the short film – which is more of an internal, poetic landscape.
[ITA] Si, ci sto lavorando proprio adesso. Il film è ambientato in Australia ed è ambientato in una prigione, anche se i temi e il tono sono molto simili a quelli del corto – che è una veduta più interna e poetica.
8. You’re filmmaker and producer. How do you fell in this second role?
Out of necessity. So far producing is something I have had to take on in order to get my films made and also to maintain some control as a director. I’m not sure if I’ll continue with that. It would be great to find the right partners – directing is hard enough!
[ITA] Per necessità. Fino ad oggi ho dovuto produrre i miei film, anche per mantenere il controllo da regista. Non sono sicuro se continuerò così. Sarebbe fantastico trovare i partners giusti – fare il regista è già abbastanza difficile!
9. How did you choose the staff for All these Creatures?
The casting for the film kind of hinged on the lead character, who is 12 years old. Knowing I needed a lot of complex and innate qualities from someone so young, I decided to leave the physical aspects of the role open, and essentially cast with a race or gender in mind. I knew I could rewrite the film around whoever had the right soul.
When I found Yared Scott, who has Ethiopian Australian heritage, I rewrote the script to reflect that and took on four local Ethiopian Australian advisors to make sure the film was accurate and sensitive to their culture. Then I set about finding the rest of the roles, who we found through a mix of casting agents and friends, and some of whom I just found just locally in the streets or schools.
The boys that play the lead character’s friends friends in the film I found as they were having a fight in the street and cast them on the spot. Like I say, you’re often looking for the right energy and innate qualities more so than just physicality or experience.
[ITA] Il casting per il film gira attorno dal personaggio principale, che ha 12 anni. Sapevo di aver bisogno di molte qualità innate e complesse, e sapevo di volere una persona giovane. Ho deciso di lasciare gli aspetti fisici del ruolo aperti, e essenzialmente scegliere senza avere in mente una razza o un sesso specifici. Sapevo di poter riscrivere il film a seconda di chi aveva l’anima giusta.
Quando ho trovato Yared Scott, che è di discendenza etiope e australiano, ho riscritto il copione per riflettere ciò, e ho assunto quattro consulenti etiope-australiani locali per fare in modo che il film fosse accurato e sensibile alla loro cultura. Poi ho trovato gli altri ruoli, che abbiamo trovato tramite un mix di agenti di casting, amici e alcuni che ho trovato nei dintorni in strada e scuole. I ragazzi che fanno la parte degli amici del protagonista, li ho trovati mentre stavano litigando per strada e ho dato loro subito la parte. Spesso cerchi l’energia giusta e le qualità innate più della fisicità o dell’esperienza.
10. What kind of message would you like to send to Italian audience of Concorto Film Festival?
I’m really pleased to be making the Italian Premiere of the film at Concorto. I have some Italian heritage myself and my composer is from Torino. The only message I have it turn off your phone and dive in!
[ITA] Sono molto lieto di fare la premiere italiana de film a Concorto. Anch’io sono di discendenza italiana e la mia compositrice è di Torino. L’unico messaggio che ho da dare è, spegnete i telefoni e immergetevi.
